Surrender Isn't Silent

ShYS1reN Última actualización:Sep 01.2026

What if surrender begins before anyone is touched? One couple starts with a question and discovers how trust, boundaries, and remote play can change the way intimacy feels. There is a strange misconception about communication in BDSM.
That it is clinical. That it belongs at the beginning, before anything interesting happens.

A list of boundaries. A few yeses, a few nos, perhaps a safe word, and then the conversation is finished and the real experience can begin.

But for me, communication is part of the experience.

Sometimes it happens before anything starts.
What do you want?
What don’t you want?
Is there anything you're curious about?
Is there anything you're unsure about?

I honestly feel that last question matters more than people realise, because uncertainty isn' t necessarily a no. Sometimes it's “I don't know yet.” Sometimes it's “I'm nervous, but I trust you enough to explore it.” And sometimes it's “I thought I wanted this, but now that I'm here, I don't.”

Unsure is often my middle name. 🤣
At the moment, Theo and I are each making our own lists of things we’d like to explore for our next meeting in February. They’re separate lists, but they’re not secret ones. We know what the other is considering, and that has created another kind of conversation between us.

Sometimes it’s as simple as, “Do you want to put it on your list?”

Other times, it invites curiosity: “You like that?”

Sometimes it’s a laugh, sometimes it’s a surprise, and sometimes it’s a conversation that goes much deeper than either of us expected because it’s got us so goddamn riled up. 🫠

But knowing something is on the other person’s list doesn’t create an obligation to do it. It simply opens the door to talking about it. The same openness exists in our most ordinary moments too.

Theo and I can browse fetishwear, toys, and equipment together without either of us freaking out if the other points at something and says, “That’s interesting.”

There’s no assumption that because one of us finds something intriguing, the other has to want it.
Sometimes it’s simply curiosity.

Sometimes it’s a conversation.
Sometimes it’s a laugh.
Sometimes we learn something about the object or experience in question from the other.
Sometimes it’s “Absolutely not.” 😬🤣

And sometimes it’s “Actually… maybe?”

Being able to say all of those things without fear of judgement is incredibly freeing. It’s why I love him and what we have built in such a short time together.

We also use fantasy as another way of opening those conversations. Dirty talk and roleplay give us a space where we can introduce ideas to each other during play without immediately turning them into plans. I’ve also used fantasy to heal past trauma. Something can be explored as a fantasy first. We can play with the idea, talk around it, discover what appeals to us and, perhaps more importantly, discover what doesn’t.

Because fantasy doesn’t automatically equal consent to reality.

Something can be incredibly exciting and sexy as a thought and still be something neither of us ever wants to experience outside that fantasy.

And that’s perfectly okay.

Sometimes the fantasy is enough.
It sparks a genuine conversation.

It makes one of us think, “Actually, I’d like to explore that for real.”

And sometimes it gives us a very clear “Nope, definitely staying a fantasy.” 😂

For me, that distinction is another form of communication. It means we can be curious without making promises, imaginative without creating expectations, and adventurous without assuming that every fantasy needs to become our reality.

Consent isn’t a door you walk through once. It’s something that stays between us throughout our entire relationship. Having met here, technology has obviously become a large part of our language.

Lovense and toy control have changed the way I communicate because they give us another way to respond to one another. A change in intensity can say something. A pause can say something. Stopping can say everything.

But the technology itself isn’t the communication. The person behind it is.

A device can respond to an instruction, but it can’t understand hesitation. It can’t know whether silence means “keep going” or “I don’t know how to tell you to stop.”

That’s where trust comes in.
The technology can become another tool through which we communicate, but it never replaces the conversation.
Sometimes that conversation happens afterwards.

Did you enjoy that?
Would you do it again?
Was there anything you didn’t like?
What would you change?

Although we don’t personally ask all those questions, we discuss things naturally, sometimes without realising. Those conversations are just as important to me as the ones beforehand, because sometimes we learn something about ourselves in the middle of an experience. Maybe something we expected to love wasn’t for us. Or maybe something we were uncertain about becomes a favourite.

I think we have discovered between us that we have very few boundaries, only the common-sense ones. But I think that’s what respectful communication has done for us. Our communication is so well-established that sometimes we don’t even need to find the words. We just know.

It isn’t always about finding the perfect words.
It isn’t about making sure nobody ever feels nervous or uncertain.
And it certainly isn’t about convincing someone to cross a boundary.
It’s about creating an environment where we know the truth.

Where yes means yes, no means no, and maybe is allowed to remain maybe.
Where changing your mind isn’t disappointing.
Where stopping doesn’t ruin anything. (Unless the Wi-Fi cuts out while I’m cumming during an audio call. Still cursing the wind over that one 😂)
Where asking, “Are you okay?” doesn’t break the mood but protects it.

Because the paradox is that communication doesn’t take away from surrender. It makes surrender possible. I can give Theo control because I know I can take it back. I can explore something unfamiliar because I know I won’t be judged if I decide it isn’t for me.

I can allow technology to become part of our play because beneath all of it is something much more important: two people listening to each other.

And perhaps that is the most intimate thing we can give each other.
Not simply access to our bodies.
Not simply control.

But the confidence that when we speak to one another, we will listen.
