Sometimes I hear people screaming to defend toys that are on the “bad list” of materials; swearing they are perfectly safe, everyone is paranoid, or are some people are just sex toy elitists. Let’s respond with science and facts:

Plastic is initially hard. It’s made soft or squishy by adding Phthalates (“thal-ates”). You also might hear this quote… “

- Sex toys (and the materials or amounts used in them) are NOT as regulated as you would think. Which is mind-blowing considering we need to slide them into places that are REALLY sensitive.
- Phthalates are banned in children’s toy in several countries, including the USA and the EU.
- Toys are often labeled “Novelty Only” or are vague (or flat-out lie) when they list the materials used within. It’s a clever workaround to avoid legal liability and an easy way to get around international shipping issues.
- If that’s still not enough, some ingredients that find their way into cheap sex toys are: Trimethyltin chloride, Phenol, Toluene, Lead, Arsenic, Antimony, and CADMIUM. All of which are universally known to be toxic. Hell, these substances have hazard instructions on how to HANDLE them safely
The softness might be great, but the additives can be horrible for the body
You will also hear the suggestion to use a condom over these suckers. But keep one thing in mind: condoms are tested against keeping out certain substances, this does not include sex toy chemicals. There’s just not enough testing out there to know if a thin layer of latex will be a good enough barrier.
What they ARE good for is keeping the toy safe from other people’s fluids – especially if you and your partner enjoy playing within an open relationship or there are other risks of STIs. Also, if the toy is porous, it will help keep it on the cleaner side.
If you’re not sure if the material is body-safe, read the list of ingredients, check the manufacturer’s website, and peruse online reviews to see what other people think.
TOYS TO AVOID
VINYL OR PVC – full of toxic chemicals, “food grade” vinyl might be safer, but it’s still porous
JELLY or other spellings – full of toxic chemicals, including Phthalates
RUBBER – labeling too vague to know the true composition AND it’s quite porous
CYBERSKIN – Or UR3, Futorotic, Fanta Flesh, Neoskin, FauxFlesh etc. which are very porous, difficult to clean, and impossible to sterilize (Fleshlight is an exception)
SILICA GEL – Similar to the pellets you find in electronics. Related to, but NOT silicone.
TPE/TPR – Including TPR-silicone, Elastomer, SEBS, “silicone blends” – might not be toxic, BUT they are porous enough you might not be able to clean it properly. Use with discretion.
Also…
- If your toy smells, throw it out
- If your toy is melting, sweating, bleeding, fusing, or weeping – for the love of god, throw it out!
- If you are determined to use any of these toys, do not share them with others!
SAFE MATERIALS
There are pros and cons of each as well as budget restrictions.
Let’s start with the lower end of the price scale and work our way up. These are non-porous*, non-toxic, cleanable with antibacterial soap or toy cleaner, hypoallergenic, and waterproof* (usable in the bathtub or shower).
ABS PLASTIC — This is the HARD plastic — Cheaper, no Phthalates, cannot be sterilized in boiling water, but still cleanable, if the are batteries (or anywhere water could get in) it’s usually not waterproof.
WOOD — Good only if the finish is medical grade/body-safe, lightweight, not all manufacturers state what the finish is made from.
CERAMIC — Good only if the glaze finish is non-porous and it’s cooked in a kiln, can be used for temperature play, middle-grade to high-end expense
GLASS — Good only if borosilicate or soda-lime glass, can be used for temperature play, middle-grade to high-end expense for good quality ones
STONE — can be sterilized in boiling water, can be used for temperature play, undetermined porosity since the finish is just a polished surface, not a sealant, very expensive (sometimes more than stainless steel), heavy
MEDICAL GRADE STAINLESS STEEL — Can be sterilized in boiling water, can be used for temperature play, very expensive, heavy
TOYS AND TEMPERATURE PLAY
It’s placing the toy in warm water or the fridge and SLOWLY heating or cooling to the desired temperature. This creates different sensations during play.
Remember to put on lots of lube, especially if it’s cold (think back to the scene from Christmas story where the boy stuck his tongue to the icy flagpole. We don’t want that happening in our vagoos … ouch)
WHAT LUBES CAN I USE?

My first impression was that it was smaller than expected. It was about the length of my hand and the insertable part wasn’t as bulbous and big as I thought it would be. It wasn’t a bad thing though. The vibrations just made it up the clit arm, but I wish they had been stronger.
The button placement was okay, and the charging was easy. All in all, it was a fine toy for the $23 investment and a good choice for budget toys.

You’ll see this model floating around many sites. Healthy Vibes, Lovehoney, Fleshlight, and Pink B.O.B all sell similar products. I ordered one from TooTimid the warranty gave me hope. I’m surprised at the power for something so simple. It’s also great for clit stimulation.
The downside between buttons and dials … dials can be a bit finicky and accidentally change when trying to manipulate positions. It’s worse if your hands are covered in lube and or you’re gripping the toy by the very end. Unexpected changes in vibes can sometimes be fun … sometimes not. RO-G-SPOT BY ROCKS OFF ($25)
The size is big enough, but not intimidating. This is nice for someone like me who likes some girth but isn’t a size queen. The material is safe and easy to clean – which alone is a godsend considering how much crap litters the market. I found the motor was a bit on the weak side (comparatively).
However, not everyone likes an 8.5 earthquake between their legs, so gentle options aren’t something to snub. I think this little dude would be for travel (just remember to take the batteries out). Also, the price is right at 25 bucks. He’s quite welcome to stay in my toy drawer.

This toy is very decent – not mind-blowing, but certainly not something to be discounted or brushed off. I found the motor was acceptable, not that loud, and okay enough to get the job done. The girth is acceptable.
I do have a few complaints: First, there’s no wall charger option – only a USB plug. Because toys are getting more tech-savvy or compatible, I don’t know if this is just something we have to make peace with. Second, the buttons felt oddly placed. However, this could just be me.
Third, I can foresee it being a bit too short for some people who love long thrusting. But, all in all, I did find it to be a step up from the budget options.

I think that’s a fairly accurate, all-around description of this toy. Since the vibrator is in the base, the rumbles don’t reach that far. Most of what I was feeling was around the vaginal opening and not as much going deeper.
I understand it’s a simple trade-off: If you want a VERY strong toy, the motor needs to be better, therefore you are going to pay more. But I was hoping a $60 toy would deliver more. The other problem I have is the tip. It seems a bit sharp or pronounced. Just my two cents.

I was intrigued by the advertisements – the visuals looked like the tip did a come hither motion. I ripped open the box in anticipation… Yep, no. It’s just a regular G-spot curve with a vibrator.

This is a toy you could put on your mantle and display as art, and no one would be the wiser – they are that beautiful. Each one is a hand-blown masterpiece created in the Glass Studio in Berkeley California by a husband and wife who are as passionate about toys as they are about the art. Their toys are different from other glass options for several reasons.
First, I’m in love with the colors – they’re not the clear rods with a bit of color embellishment. They also guarantee these babies for a lifetime. If not, they will replace it for free (only once though). Another nice touch is all their packaging is recycled or re-purposed. Fucking Sculptures Toys are as environmentally friendly as you can get. I love this toy – smooth, great curve, and gorgeous.
UPDATE: Fucking Sculptures has, sadly, closed its doors. So, if you have one, or can get your hands on one, they are collector pieces now.

This company doesn’t label itself as sex toys, rather, “intelligent intimate lifestyle products”. The vibrations are double trouble since there are TWO – one in the main toy and one in the rabbit arm. I also found it fairly quiet for something so powerful.
But why the “intelligent” part? Rather than fiddling with buttons to change the sensations, Barbara has a special program that starts off with a slow tease then builds until you’re ready to climax … then it backs off … then brings you up again. It’s a cheeky, little lover.
*I will throw in a disclaimer – some people do not like edging (being cut off just before an orgasm). They want the buildup and immediate climax after – and that’s okay. If that is the case, just use the regular pulses and speeds. Personally, I love IM with the clit stimulator.

NJOY PURE WAND ($110)
Some consider this the Cadillac of sex toys. It’s also a situation of “you get what you pay for” – and you get a lot for something that seems so simple.
What struck me first was the weight, which could be a turn-off for some but enticing for others, however, I like how the toy does some of the work for you.
The surface is completely smooth, and the stainless steel makes it as clean as you will be able to get any toy (especially if you want to do p-spot play with the smaller bulb). I’m a clean freak with my toys, so the fact I can boil it makes me so happy. It’s also a great option for temperature play, with metal retaining heat or cold far better than other materials. If there was a house fire, I would run into save this little guy.
